In the spring of 2010, on a beautiful post-flood evening, a group of Fargo-Moorhead men interested in Roller Derby met to discuss the possibility and reality of forming a men’s roller derby league.

The meeting confirmed there was enough interest, and even the name Rock City Riot was selected.  Practice began shortly after that first meeting. Under the leadership and coaching of some acclaimed derby girls, the men began preparing for their skills testing. The men were eager, the coaches were patient and the bruises were fun!

In September 2011, the BisMan Bomberz were founded to promote men’s roller derby
in the Bismarck/Mandan area. Like RCR, they worked with the established women’s
league in the area when starting out. The Bomberz were accepted into the Men’s
Roller Derby Association (MRDA) in 2014 which allowed them to skate at a more com-
petitive level of roller derby.

These teams have met many times over the years on the track
and have formed friendships off. When talks of a merger came
up in 2016, it made sense to make this brotherhood official. The
Dakota Men’s Roller Derby Norsemen charter was submitted in
January 2017 combining the leagues from Fargo/Moorhead
and Bismarck/Mandan.

Dakota Men’s Roller Derby is dedicated to developing, promoting, and sustaining the competitive
sport of men’s roller derby. Our vision is to advance the sport of men’s flat track roller derby in North
Dakota and beyond. DMRD’s core values are diversity, community, and excellence. DMRD is a
skater-owned-and-operated league. All skating members pay monthly dues, purchase and maintain their own equipment and uniforms as well as participate on a variety of league committees.
